tiled interior, allens looks every bit the historic institution it is. the huge wooden hexagonal cutting block in the middle of the shop, however, signals loud and clear that this is a proper butchers. carcases of meat, such as the matured beef for which allens is especially famous, are strikingly displayed. the stock reflects the changing seasons, so during the game season, the shop is a carnivore’s delight, filled with assorted furred and feathered game, while thanksgiving and christmas see it filled with turkeys. its mayfair location means that historically allens’s customers over tome gallops through the area's 350 year history, starting from its time as soggy farm land and following its story up to the modern day. produced by mayfair estate agents wetherell, founded by the mayfair guru peter wetherell, "the story of mayfair: from 1664 onwards" identifies seven periods in which mayfair has experienced a "step change". each chapter gives a useful overview of the changes in each of those periods from 1664 up to the present day, and beyond, too, with a collection of predictions on how mayfair will look by 2030. there are excellent photographs throughout, and pictorials of mayfair's lost mansions and also former mansions returned to returned their former residential use are particularly successful additions to the book. martin millard's cartoons to illustrate each later this year. the private members' club at 40 dover street is converting rooms in its georgian townhouse building into hotel suites. there will be sixteen rooms in total and guests at the new hotel will also have access to the club's restaurants, nightclub and garden. the arts club was founded in 1863 and was at first based in hanover square, moving to its current location in 1896. it benefited
